COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to give the students a comprehensive overview of skills and issues found in the creation of two-dimensional art.
RATIONALE: The objective of the course is to build drawing and painting skills that will be a starting point for the student to build their portfolio.
v Emphasis on the elements of art and design principles.
v Introduction to the history of art and the role of artists.
v Issues in composition.
v Importance of artist intent in the creation of their artwork.
v Issues in originality and synthesis.
v Create a working portfolio.
v Career opportunities.
v Proper use of materials and tools.

SUPPLIES AND MATERIALS: Students are responsible for bringing in the following supplies:
v 11x14 inch sketchbook
v Set of drawing pencils (HB – B6)
v Pencil sharpener
v Kneaded eraser
OPTIONAL:
v 2 XXL Black T-Shirts
v Set of Prismacolor Art Stix
v Box for supplies
v Self-sharpening charcoal pencils
LAB FEE: All students are required to pay a $15.00 art fee that will cover the consumption of art materials and supplies.

First Quarter: Basic Drawing Technique.
1. Observational Exercises
a. Volume, contour & Spatial Drawing
b. The Gesture.
2. Light and Shadow.
a. Three Dimensional Illusion
i. Learning different shading styles
b. Learning how to see the real
3. Perspective.
a. Atmospheric Perspective
b. Linear Perspective
i. Single point perspective
ii. Double point perspective
Second Quarter: Figure Drawing (Drawing the Human Body)
1. The Golden Mean. 1.158
a. F The Devine Ratio
2. Using the Figure Gesture
a. Rembrandt’s Rules of Form
3. Timed figural exercises from a live model.
a. Drapery on the Human Body.
4. Proportion of the Human Face
5. Hand And feet Studies
Midterm examinations: The Midterm Examination will consist of both a multiple-choice test and a project in which the students will demonstrate their understanding of the skills Learned during the first semester.
Second Semester: Painting Skills.
Third Quarter: Beginning Painting skills
1. Color Theory
a. Color wheel
b. Color Relationship exercises
2. Proper Mixing of paint technique.
3. Layering of Paint
a. Planning your composition
4. Intro to Landscape painting.
5. Intro to Portrait Painting.
Fourth Quarter: Abstraction
1. Objective Abstraction
a. Cubism
b. Expressionism
2. Non Objective Abstraction
a. Plastic Cubism
b. Free association.
c. Symolism
3. Development of Final Project. 50% Of Final Grade in the class.
Final Examination will consist of a cumulative multiple-choice examination of terms and techniques covered in the class.
HOME LEARNING - PROJECTS – CRITIQUES:
Home Learning: Students will be required to produce 3 pages of studies in their sketchbook each week. At the end of each month, students are expected to have completed 10 personal studies and 2 master’s copies.
Projects: Students will be working on multiple projects to scaffold skills.
Critiques: Critiques take a major role in the drawing and painting class. Critique participation is key to the evaluation of student work. Students MUST participate in every critique. Critiques add to the student ability to communicate ideas in the classroom.
LATE OR LOST WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

PROJECT EVALUATION: 30%
CLASS PARTICIPATION: 30%
SKETCHBOOK/HOME LEARNING: 10%
MANDATORY SKILLS PRATICES: 10%
CRITIQUES: 20%
GRADES:
A: 90 – 100
B: 80 – 89
C: 70 – 79
D: 60 – 69
F: 59 – 0
CLASS RULES:
v Come to class and get here on time.
v Come to class prepare. Always have your SKETCHBOOK.
v Listen carefully and follow instructions.
v Use safety in the classroom. Be attentive with sharp tools.
v Respect the point of view from other students and the teacher.
v Respect materials and equipment in the classroom.
v Follow the Code of Student Conduct.
DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES:
v 1st offense – VERBAL WARNING
v 2nd offense – DETENTION
v 3rd offense – Referral to administrator for further disciplinary action.
Detentions are given with the full support of the Administration and will be served. You will be notified in writing if you receive a detention. Your parents will be responsible for making alternate transportation arrangements.
